On the coast of the Mayan Riviera, between Puerto Aventuras (10 minutes north) and Tulum (15 minutes south) we have many beautiful beaches for your enjoyment. Some are listed below; others are a secret that we only share with our guests…so they stay a secret! When you check in to Camp Akumal you receive a detailed list and map so that you can hit a different paradise every day of the week!
XPU-HA BEACH – Xpu-Ha is a gem. The water in the bay is beautiful and usually calm. The whole bay is not heavily built up with hotels, so it is the best place around for a long walk in the sand. There are Paddle Board and other water sport rentals. You can also take kite surfing lessons. They serve ice-cold buckets of beer for a good price and have a full menu of Mexican and International specialties. You can sit at the tables and lounges when using the restaurant facilities. Check out Xpu-Ha on a Saturday or Sunday – there is a band that usually starts around 3:00 and the locals all get up to dance!
XCACEL BEACH – Beautiful, usually quiet beach and turtle sanctuary. Turtles nests are marked off with a stick jetting out of the sand, please make sure to keep your distance. Turtle nesting season is July till November. They will request a donation to park and access the beach, we usually give them 50 pesos per car. There is a lifeguard. If you walk to the right of the entrance there is a path that will take you to a small cenote. If you walk to the left the ocean water is calmer and you can snorkel. There is nowhere to buy food or drinks but you can pack a cooler and have a picnic!
CALETA TANKA – There is an entrance fee for this beach, but it is worth it. You do get use of lounges, tables and facilities. It is usually very quiet and you can find some shade or ask them to bring you an umbrella, the staff is always eager to please. There is a little restaurant and you can order from the beach and they will bring you your food and drinks. The ocean is rough, but that is not the reason you came. On the south side of the beach is the “caleta” where a freshwater underground cave has a small opening and is flowing into the sea. The area is encased in rocks and creates a natural pool. The water is shallow, crystal clear and absolutely spectacular!
